ELEMENT--Rectilinear Shape
Discussing FORM: What is the specific communicative strategy? Where is it found?
The communicative strategy that is used is rectilinear shapes. Rectilinear shapes are shapes that consist of straight lines and angular corners. Those shapes are found throughout the garment except for the sleeves. The sleeves are geometric shapes. Geometric shapes are the basic shapes that everyone knows such as squares, circles, triangles, etc. The photo below is from the Afflante 2013-2014 ‘Overground’ collection and it displays both rectilinear and geometric shapes
Discussing CONTENT: What does it communicate?
The rectilinear lines usually communicate sharpness. Since those shapes consists of straight lines and angular corners it displays an artificial, mechanical, precise feeling. By observing the garment below, those shapes are giving the garment structure and a clean, serious look. The colors aren’t as exciting, but the shapes make the garment look intriguing, strong, and sleek.
