ELEMENT: High Contrast, Illusion of Space
Describing FORM: What is the specific communicative strategy? Where is it found?
High contrast occurs when values are far apart on the spectrum, the two windows cut very strong and very present beams of light into what would otherwise be a darkened room. The illusion of form is a gradual change in value that creates a sense of space. The lower right image and the man in the forefront are essentially black as pitch, making the man almost seem 2D, but as your eyes move further back, the illumination assures you the room has depth and gives way to larger audience. There is a strong sense of atmospheric perspective.
Discussing CONTENT: What is being communicated?
The use of natural light here gives one a sense of seriousness, as if an important meeting is taking place. It makes it all the more connected that you cannot see any expression of the gentleman in the foreground, but his gesture can only be perceived as contemplative. The movements and expression of the illuminated men in the background tie it all together.
