This image contains values in predominately the lower value range, which is what would put it in the Low-Key category. Images of this nature tend to be darker, even if only just slightly.
This still from The Matrix Reloaded, is of one of the many action scenes, but the lighting was intentionally made to be darker. This scene also uses value to give a sense of depth with the atmospheric haze in the background.
Discussing CONTENT: What does it communicate?
This still evokes an eerie sense of anticipation, like something bad is going to happen. And this lighting is seen throughout most of the film, and so you get a similar sense. This could have easily been made into a fun action scene just by adding a brighter sky to add more contrast, but they didn’t do that. This movie takes itself very seriously, and is bold with its tone throughout the movie. The lighting helps people remember the movie and think back to its underlying message, that the world is just an illusion.
