PRINCIPLE-- Excessive Unity
Discussing FORM: What is the specific communicative strategy? Where is it found?
The specific communicative strategy is excessive unity. Excessive unity is when a composition has too little variety to create a monotonous, static and uninteresting design. This is found in the photo below, there excessive amounts of these high heeled shoes lined up in an array.
Discussing CONTENT: What does it communicate?
Excessive unity usually communicates dullness and inactivity. Looking at the photo below the first thing that may come to mind is, “Why are there so many pairs of these shoes?” or “Did the artist even try?” One thing repeated over and over again can not always mean the artist wanted to produce a monotonous composition. There could be meaning behind that one object. What you could be thinking is, “What’s the significance of that one object?” and “What is the story the artist is trying to tell us about the repetition of this one object?”
