Continuation is an aspect of the Gestalt Theory that occurs when something continues—usually a line, and edge, or a direction—from one object to another.
Easily noticed in this picture are the various bright streaks and spots centered around the white fog, leading the eyes in a circle.
Discussing CONTENT: What does it communicate?
Use of continuation is a great way to cause the viewer’s eyes to repeatedly follow certain patterns in a scene that the designer intends them to. In the below screenshot, we can see this pattern caused by the ominous red glows gathered around the fog in the distance. This not only gives the viewer the chills, but causes a sense that this, albeit threatening, may be the path leading forward. Image Source:
