Proximity is an aspect of the gestalt theory that occurs when separate objects look as if they belong together based on their proximity to one another.
We can see these Final Fantasy XV characters overlapping each other creating a form of unity.
Discussing CONTENT: What does it communicate?
This form of unity is an evidence that they can show their strength and how powerful they are by being together. Not strength of power, but also in friendship and family. The aspect of family and friends is important in the Japanese culture, and this Japanese game teaches us that. Also, letting the main character in the front shows how trustworthy he is to lead his subordinates.
