Unity is the aesthetic arrangement of elements: the elements look as if they belong together. Unity with variety adds interest to the design by the use of diversifying elements.
Discussing content: What does it communicate?
This picture communicates a revolutionary act towards the system. It is a rebel behavior and it is supported by the little person running away from the "cycle of life" that's created by society and the fact that he is out of the line is an example of unity with variety because it is breaking with the predictable path in the line. The piece communicates a rebellious act in a "cute" way because of the way the elements were used and the fact that theres one person that wants to escape makes the piece look much more interesting than if the person was following the line like the other do.
